Waratah bowl

Recent studio experimentation has involved waratah pods. I had some trouble sourcing these and after a visit to a friend of a friend in the Southern Highlands I picked a bag of fallen waratah pods from the ground of a private garden. I had to scrape the soft centre of the pods, sand them to remove the hairy down, then drilled small holes and incorporated them into a large coiled basket made from crimson chunky Nutscene twine and dark brown waxed linen thread. This is the largest coiled form I have made this year, approximately 21cms in diameter, and it was a satisfying 36 hours of work with some tricky stitching to ensure the pods were secure. This was made as a gift for Geraldine who sells my work at her shop Nortje by Geraldine in Berry, NSW
