Coiling and stitching

March 1, 2014

There are a variety of stitching methods for coiling. I have developed the use of blanket stitch, in an alternating pattern, to create firm forms and an overall weave appearance. I use an unwax linen thread, and tension every stitch before moving on. My forms emerge gradually and I allow the materials to dictate the form as much as possible.

The detail shown here is of one of my first baskets completed- an Oval turned-edge Basket made from a twisted local reed Eleocharis sphacelata, Tall Spike-rush and Baumea articulata, Jointed Twig-rush. The cordage is all handmade.
